It’s not easy to listen to sensible advice

The day I went to meet you at the Sunny Shore Café
My footsteps on the gravel made two sparrows fly away
The windows all were open to the rolling western wind
I thought about the birds that flew, wondered where they went
Were they happy with their circumstance or did they have regrets
Did they question their decisions or did they just forget
I’m too used, too used to waiting round
Never knew what really had me down
The road that runs beyond the edge of town

Leaves me lost and lingering from an empty bed

Late last night in the kitchen light
By the window looking out at the moon
I wrote a tune, something new
That I promise to sing for you soon
But I worry, I guess, is it really for the best
To tell what my heart is holding inside?
So for now won’t you listen to the hum of the wind
For it carries the sound of the sea
Where the wings of the gulls lift them gracefully above
and there are treasures buried beneath

But the worry is mine that a tune will outshine
The way this love has so simply begun

Of steps in the sand
